Trinchero?s Huntsinger To Retire : St. Helena Star

Winemakers call on Cuomo to deny Senega gas storage permits - News - The Leader - Corning, NY

Huntsinger, who had significant years of experience at Almaden Winery, Korbel Champagne Cellars, Christian Brothers Winery and Corbet Canyon Vineyards, was chosen to manage production expansion. According to Trinchero in a statement released by the company, the systems and the team that Huntsingers leadership in production developed formed the basis for the rapid growth of the products that would drive the organizations successes. These innovations included the design and construction of a bottling and warehouse distribution facility at Green Island Road in American Canyon, and the incorporation of the former Christian Brothers Winery facility on Main Street in St. Helena that tripled production. The Main Street facility is now the companys headquarters.

Opponents of Houston-based Crestwood Midstream's project said at a news conference in Albany that it would endanger drinking water, the local economy and the region's wine and tourism industry. "There is no justification for jeopardizing the Finger Lakes' place as an international destination for world-class agri-tourism," said Lou Damiani, owner of Damiani Wine Cellars. "There is no propane shortage and we have worked too hard to get where we are now." The project, which would expand natural gas storage capacity and add underground propane storage, is awaiting permits from the state Department of Environmental Conservation. The Schuyler County Legislature passed a resolution in June calling for state approval of the project, saying the salt caverns have been used for natural gas and propane storage for decades without incident. But opponents said that while salt caverns represented 7 percent of the nation's 407 underground storage sites for gas in 2002, they were responsible for all 10 catastrophic accidents involving gas storage between 1972 and 2004.

Dionne Warwick knows her way to San Jose - Yahoo News

When the song became a hit, Warwick said she figured she'd better visit San Jose, which was then a farming community growing prunes, grapes and apricots. "It was a little country town. But one of the most beautiful things I saw when I was there for the first time was their rose garden," she said. Today, that 5 -acre Municipal Rose Garden is still blooming, but what's really flourishing is technology, as the orchards have been replaced by Silicon Valley firms. "It's a thriving city now," Warwick said. San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed said he's pleased Warwick is coming back to town to sing.

The natural gas would be piped in from other states and distributed via the Dominion and Millennium pipelines. Crestwood also owns Finger Lakes LPG Storage, which wants to store propane and butane in depleted salt caverns. The caverns were created by a century of mining by US Salt, which has a sprawling facility on the shore of Seneca Lake thats now owned by Crestwood Midstream.

Weekend Warrior: Randy Brown | The Journal Gazette

The kicker of the article weekend warrior: Randy Brown Lynn Altevogt For The Journal Gazette weekend warrior: Randy Brown As executive vice president and general manager of Memorial Coliseum, Randy Brown is responsible for the overall management of the Coliseum as well as for attracting events to the facility. This is no small task, given that the Coliseum has about 1,300 events a year; 58-year-old Brown has been helping it thrive for the past 24 years. And although Brown stays quite busy with his job, in 2011, his wife and son thought he might need another hobby. So they bought him a winemaking kit for Christmas.Little did they know what they were starting, he said.To date, Brown has made or bottled 18 batches of wine, filling 540 bottles. He says his goal is to maintain a cellar with 400 bottles. While he has now made more than a dozen types of wine, he says he got started very slowly and credits the folks at Brewers Art Supply in Fort Wayne with the great suggestions and help they offered to get him off on the right foot. When it comes to making wine or brewing any kind of alcohol cleanliness is important. Brown is always very careful with how he cleans all of the equipment, he said. With winemaking, hygiene is very important, Brown said. Because I am borderline neurotic on cleanliness, I have yet to lose a batch of wine. You put so much work into making a batch that you dont want to have to spoil one out.Randy and his wife, Ann, have bought the property next door to their house to begin their own vineyard. They have just completed excavation of the site and hope to start planting a few vines next year. It is said that grapes grow best in poor soil, so the Browns expect some outstanding harvests in a few years. But you wont be finding his wine in stores anytime soon.Brown said he is happiest sharing his homemade wine with family and friends.

Wisconsin grape harvest getting a slow start; lower yield expected than '13 | Star Tribune

"They could use a good drying-out period. Three weeks without rain would benefit corn, grain and grapes." But the news isn't all bad. Growers say the quality looks good. At the state's largest vineyard, Wollersheim Winery near Prairie du Sac, winemaker Philippe Coquard said the quality looks "beautiful" even as the vineyard expects a 30 to 40 percent drop in production. "Some varieties survived better than others. The lack of sunlight and heat in the summer has affected the crop. It's not the best.

Though the ferry promoters are offering a larger slice of nearby wetlands in trade for the ferry terminal site, Rachal said that cant compensate for the $2.7 million and thousands of hours spent restoring the preserve. Even though the county would retain ownership, it would still be swapping out conservation lands for a private enterprise, and we think thats inappropriate, Rachal said. The countys land management plan for the preserve paints a lusher picture of the restored habitat than the Scheda study does. It describes the vegetation and wildlife habitat in the preserve as in very good condition, with the exception of some areas overgrown with exotic and nuisance plants.

I felt like I was replacing someone who hadnt left yet, LeBard recalled. Something wasnt addingup. It turned out that the season was really a working interview, and Cosentino offered him the lead role in developing the new brands, The Zin and Cigar Zin, but out of a new facility in Lodi. Where the hell is Lodi? asked LeBard, whod never been to the Central Valley. He took the job when he learned that hed still have some Napa cab to play with, but the shock continued upon his late-night Lodi arrival. You can imagine my surprise when I woke up at 7 a.m. the next morning, walked outside, and in every direction as far as I could see, it was flat, he laughed. I was like, What did Ido? What he did was build the brands from 20,000 cases to 140,000 over seven years while also designing two cutting-edge production facilities.

Farm worker faces No. 2 Republican for House seat - Yahoo News

The economy and demographics of McCarthy's district, which is more than one-third Latino, make immigration a pressing question there. But to the frustration of advocates for overhauling the immigration system, McCarthy has won re-election to four terms without answering their demands. A few other California Republicans have embraced comprehensive immigration legislation like the bill that passed the Senate last year before dying in the House. But McCarthy rejected that approach, joining other House GOP leaders in calling for border security first and a step-by-step approach. McCarthy's campaign aides declined to address Garcia's candidacy but provided a statement from the majority leader in which he promises: "I will continue to fight for our community and give our hard working families a strong voice in Washington." The statement mentions reducing regulation and taxes, a reliable water supply and energy production, but not immigration. Over time, McCarthy and other Republicans may have to recalibrate their stances on immigration in response to a changing electorate. But for the short term, McCarthy appears headed for easy re-election in November. Republicans are expected to retain the House majority.

The gorilla, named Joanne, is able to sit and eat by herself and is often seen riding on the back of her mother, Imani. Joanne often climbs off and crawls around when her mom stops to forage, animal handlers said. "We've seen Joanne crawl away from Imani a little bit while she's sitting on exhibit," said Jami Pawlowski, keeper at the Safari Park. "Imani always keeps her eye on her, but Joanne is testing out her independence and seeing how far she can get." Keepers said they believe Joanne has eight teeth now, allowing her to sample solid foods like fruits and vegetables, like slices of grapes and kale. She primarily nurses from her mother, however. The young gorilla shares her habitat with seven others of her species, including two youngsters, 3-year-old Monroe and 6-year-old Frank. The young males are eager to interact with Joanne, and even though the mother is very protective of her baby, she sometimes lets Frank briefly hold her.

Baby gorilla monkeying around just fine at Zoo | San Diego 6 | Local News

Friday, August 29, 2014 By KPBS The San Diego Zoo Safari Park's baby gorilla, Joanne, is learning to crawl and can be seen sitting and eating by herself confidently, according to the park. The now 5-month-old gorilla rides on mother Imani's back usually, but when Imani pauses or stops to forage, baby Joanne will climb off and spend time sitting and crawling around the nearby area. Animal care staff report that Joanne is much more active now that she is a little older, taking fewer naps and sampling solid foods. She is estimated to now have eight teeth, enough to help her chew her favorite fruits and veggies: kale and grapes cut in half. While her primary source of nutrition is still from nursing, the growing gorilla is curious of any food items that her mother is eating and she watches as Imani forages, mimicking those behaviors by picking up fruits and veggies on her own.

Cuties clementines from Sun Pacific will be added as a seasonal fruit option this fall; "junior" bananas are being tested and even blueberries are under consideration as a future option, reveals Greg Watson, senior vice president of menu innovation, in an interview with USA TODAY. "This is consistent with what we've said we'd do," said Watson. "This is part of the journey we started four years ago to make Mom feel better about Happy Meals." More from USAToday: The top 10 lowest paying college majors McDonald's increasingly is looking at whole fruits that would rotate according to season. That require less labor and packaging than the current apple slices, which have been a huge hit with more than 1.1 billion packages sold since 2012. For McDonald's, it's about concocting Happy Meals that appeal both to kids and their parents.

Not only can this permanently decrease the amount of water that an aquifer can hold, but it can also lead to disruptions on the surface through land subsidence. (See " In California, Demand for Groundwater Causing Huge Swaths of Land to Sink .") We have no choice but to drill more wells and chase the water down. In some places in the Central Valley, land has dropped by a foot. This has damaged roads, pipes, and other infrastructure and has caused some canals to stop working. Other states do have restrictions on groundwater pumping, and this fall two bills will be taken up by the California legislature to consider the issue.

Ditch The Sugar, Take The Fruit - Taste - The Buffalo News

There are other benefits. Farming the land cultivates the land. It also saves it. "The idea is if we are farming more of our land we won't develop more of our land," says Doug Fabbioli, chair of the Rural Economic Development Committee and owner of Fabbioli Vineyards. By keeping commercial and residential development from its relentless march, the county also exhausts fewer resources to support costly infrastructure projects like highways, schools and safety facilities. Water use statewide went up by 1 percent this year, according to the State Water Resources Control Board, despite the statewide drought. Much of the increase came from Southern California. People who over-water to the point that runoff spills onto sidewalks or streets, or those who hose down sidewalks, could be penalized. Agriculture is by far the greatest water user, adding up to about 75 percent of all consumption in the state. California leads the nation in more than a dozen crops, including almonds and grapes, but a new study estimates farmers will leave nearly 430,000 acres unplanted at a cost of $2.2 billion to the state economy. Cities and suburbs use about 20 percent of the state's water.

Climate Change Poses Threat to US Juice Grape Industry - AccuWeather.com

It will be a normal yield for seedless grapes from the Mediterranean in 2014, says Robert Zerres of Zerres Fruit Partners, a Germany-based table grape import specialist. In certain areas of Spain and for certain producers bunch sizes are very small because of the weather but new plantations will offset some of the shortfall. In Italy, the seedless volume will be more or less the same as last year but quality appears to be a bit lower than in 2013 because cold temperatures affected the blossom. For seeded Victoria grapes from Italy again the volume is the same but quality is slightly reduced. Zerres says his contacts in Spain suggest production is down by about 50% this season, or at least 25% depending on the grower.
